In 2025, the sun might burn up the planet

Richard Carrington, a British astronomer, was examining sunspots in 1859 when he witnessed a flash of intense light emanating from the sun that lasted for almost five minutes. The Carrington Event, as it came to be known, was the strongest solar storm ever recorded. Mass destruction occurred on Earth as a result of the Sun's massive discharge of hot plasma.

At one in the morning, gold miners in the Rocky Mountains believed the sun had risen because the Aurora was dazzling. Without human intervention, telegraph systems around the world. They weren't even linked to the power; they were simply surviving on the irrational quantity of current the incident produced. Without electricity, messages could still be sent from New York to Pittsburgh. The horrifying part is that these occurrences are, and I mean this sincerely, not uncommon.

Aurora was observed across the world, and although you might generally only expect to see it in countries like Iceland or Finland, this particular occurrence was so extreme that Aurora could be seen even here in Australia. On September 7th, 1859, this area's local newspaper even penned the following:

“The Southern Aurora, which last week for three evenings starting after Sunset and lighting up the Heavens with a stunning Hue of red, was seen by the majority of our readers”. A solar superstorm comparable in size to the Carrington catastrophe almost missed Earth in 2012 by just 12 days. And these things happen in cycles; every 11 years, the Sun's magnetic field completely reverses, which results in a lot of solar activity. Currently, we're just entering the next solar maximum.

The actual query, then, is: “What would occur if The Carrington Event occurred today?” because everything in the Modern Age is powered by electricity. Even today, many of our cars and the lights in our houses, and our phones all depend on electricity. How would we rebound if the global energy grid went down for a few years? Unimaginable energy is released during these situations. Energy to the power of 32 ergs was conveyed by the Carrington flare. This is comparable to 700 billion Hiroshima bombs, each the size of a small child.

A Carrington-level event, according to a 2013 analysis, would cost the North American power industry alone 2.6 trillion dollars in electrical interruptions. For the first time in centuries, there would be worldwide blackouts that would continue for years. You can call me selfish, but can you picture how everyone would see the nighttime stars? This darkening?

It would occur since the incident would harm these extraordinarily hard-to-replace Transformers that operate at extremely high voltages. But what about our space activities? What kind of damage would this cause to telescopes, rockets, and satellites? If that did happen while people were working on the moon base as NASA had intended, it would be quite problematic for them because this kind of radiation is not kind to the human body.

Additionally, extremely high-orbiting satellites are in great danger. The alarming problem is that the majority of these high-orbit satellites regulate our communications and GPS, and they are harmed by high-energy particles. I'm talking about the $50 million in satellites that Starlink has already lost to geomagnetic storms. The Carrington event, the largest solar storm ever recorded, is quite modest in comparison to other storms, which makes me feel even more uneasy.

Scientists have been able to examine the tree rings in ancient forests like this one and measure the carbon 14 atoms in each ring. They have found enormous spikes in the years 774 and 994, which indicate superflares may have occurred in those years. Furthermore, these occurrences would have had to be huge for tree rings to record them. Possibly 10 or 100 times larger than the Carrington event. So, why do these bizarre occurrences continue, and why do I believe that we are about to enter the most hazardous solar activity phase of the past ten years?

The sun is particularly active at these maximums, frequently producing CMEs. Our current cycle began in 2019 and will conclude in the year 2025. Although we are always learning and are still far from understanding these cycles completely, one thing is certain. For 2025, we must be ready.

The real question, I suppose, is what can we do to defend ourselves, and it all starts with detection to give everyone as much warning as we can. We continuously monitor these mass ejections using the Soho spacecraft to determine if they are headed our way. When we do, we can predict when it will arrive based on the speed at which this mass ejection is traveling.

Offers us typically between 12 and 48 hours notice. Everyone must move fast because this time is limited. Alarms must be raised, and all energy grids must be shut down and unplugged, according to the governments. It will be necessary for everyone to unplug their electronics, and wrap their phones, and other tiny electronics in tin foil to prevent them from being fried.

To prevent damage, satellites will be placed in safety mode. We'll be able to restart everything and reconnect to the grid if everything is finished promptly. People would likely die because hospitals and other emergency services would not be able to access the electricity they need in these circumstances. Though many of the electronic parts would be utterly fried, your car would probably be fine. Most likely damaged would be the screens, charging outlets, and reverse cameras.

The chances are not absurdly great, but the threat is unquestionably present. We are about to reach the most dangerous time, The Solar Maximum, and some scientists predict that there is a 12% chance that we may be hit by a Carrington-level event in the next 10 years. Everyone would go crazy if an asteroid were headed for the Earth, but these things are calm.
